About Positive Aging

Founded to Help Others in 1990

Guide to Retirement Living which is currently published as the Positive Aging SourceBook was founded by Steve Gurney in 1990 to provide individuals, families, and professionals with the most comprehensive listing of every retirement community, assisted living, nursing and rehab center and home care option.

Digital Pioneer in Senior Living

Launched in 1995, one of the first websites to feature a comprehensive and objective digital platform of senior living resources.

Comprehensive and Complete

Positive Aging SourceBook has always been committed to serving the readers by listing every senior housing option whether they are paid advertisers or not. We understand that readers need all of the available choices to make an informed decision. Positive Aging SourceBook understands the complex and emotional aspects to decision-making that our reader goes through. That’s why every issue features dozens of articles written by foremost experts on aging issues and real-life stories detailing solutions that have worked for others.

The Preferred Resource for Senior-Serving Professionals

Positive Aging SourceBook is an invaluable resource to thousands of professionals and organizations who work with seniors and their loved ones in the Mid-Atlantic. In addition, they organized and promoted hundreds of events for senior-serving professionals that offered networking and education opportunities to thousands and helped grow the community of providers.

Acquired by The Washington Post in 1998

Guide to Retirement Living joined a wholly-owned subsidiary and was published alongside New Homes Guide, Apartment Showcase, Washington Jobs, Spaces, and a variety of other comprehensive resource guides.

A New Exciting Chapter
  • In 2019, Steve Gurney had an opportunity to buy Positive Aging Sourcebook back from The Washington Post. His team immediately rebranded to the Positive Aging Sourcebook and made many improvements to the design and content.
  • In 2020, when all of our lives were rocked by the pandemic, Positive Aging Sourcebook responded by creating a series of online gatherings for professionals. Since then, the audience has expanded to include older adults and families in every discussion. Over 30,000 individuals have attended these discussions which are held 2-3 weekly on a wide variety of topics.
  • These online discussions that include older adults, families, and providers making connections together led to the rebranding as the Positive Aging Community.
